The first long-term report on osseointegrated implants (Brånemark and colleagues, 1981) followed 2,768 implants in 410 jaws placed from 1965 to 1980; in the standardised group, 81% of upper-jaw and 91% of lower-jaw implants remained stable after 5–9 years. 1

Many older patients still have Brånemark System® implants. If you do, a dentist can often still source compatible parts; bring any records you have.
